AbstractThe development of solutions that combine technical and environmental performances is a very important trend in the coating industry. This presentation will cover some studies in which sustainability was a key driver guiding the developments of solutions that address both technical and environmental performances.
The first study comprises the replacement of APE-surfactants with APE-free biobased surfactants in emulsion polymerization of vinyl-acrylic latex for low VOC interior decorative paints. The effect of these APE-free biobased surfactants on latex properties such as clot formation, residual monomer, particle size, mechanical stability and contact angle will be compared with standard APE and APE-free surfactants as well as the impact of those latexes on the wet scrub resistance of paints.
The second study comprises the developments of a reactive biobased surfactant and a low VOC biobased coalescent for decreasing surfactant leaching and improving film formation and water resistance of the final coatings.
